I was a substitute teacher when I was trying to be a history teacher. Now I'm unemployed and trying to get a job with Union Pacific or CSX.

Welcome aboard. I'm going to be out in California later this week and will be near San Francisco over the weekend. Where is the gaming store you guys will be playing at? I doubt I'll be able to get there Saturday, but if they have 1/3000 scale stuff for sale I'd totally check it out. I'm on a first name basis with pretty much every seller in that scale in the Midwest. Actually, I think I'm also the only buyer of that scale in the Midwest...

Cool, that sounds like a lot of fun. I'm getting back from a trip to San Diego that evening otherwise I'd show up for sure. My gaming group just played a round of Naval Thunder up there a few weeks ago and I got a few newbies to play. Games Plus is great for teaching things since you'll always find people who want to try something new.
Did you let the store know you're running this? If so, they will post it on their website to get the game more attention.

I'd love to come up and run through a few skirmishes but I don't know if I'll have the time. I've gotten to be pretty busy despite not really have a job anymore. I'll send you a pm if any significant amount of time appears.

This rule works well to give Destroyers a challenge. I dropped it for the scenario I ran at Rock-Con and regretted it as soon as the destroyers charged. I do like the house rules meesch56 uses which lets all torpedoes get fired in the cruiser shooting phase. It lets battleships somewhat defend themselves but still gives destroyers a chance to do something. I might use that rule, but only if I have all three classes of ships out. Otherwise cruisers have a hard time beating back destroyers and too many ships get torpedoed.

Those ships look great. What did you use for the base? I love clear bases for my ships.

Well, I finally found the time to test out the Plaskolite stuff with a ship and a label on it and it looks okay. It costs much less that the Litko stuff I have been using, but it doesn't look that much worse. The only problem is I have to cut it up but if that saves me 15-20 cents per base and I need a couple hundred bases that is a worthwhile tradeoff for me. My time is cheap since I'm not really working and my gaming funds are really tight and spread out amongst a number of projects.

I'm planning on introducing Colonial Battlefleet to my local gaming group and trying to figure out how many ships and people I should fit into one game. I don't want everyone to get into the game quickly and don't want to get bogged down. Does anyone who has tried this before have any thoughts?

I'm going to check out a science surplus store to see if microscope slides could work out for me. I suppose I'll see if people sell scraps of plastic around here but I use a clear acrylic base right now that you can see through. It looks really good on my blue background and I think it would be harder to find stuff to match it.

I picked up some material from Home Depot today with a cutter and tried to make bases out of them. The first one I tried was a small sheet of clear plastic by Plaskolite. It cuts very easily but is somewhat frosty on one side. It is also very, very cheap to buy. The second material I tried was clear acrylic sheet by Optix. It is thicker and harder material at .093" thick. It looks much better that the Plaskolite stuff but is an absolute pain to cut. I scored away at it for about 20 minutes without much success. One piece broke off that would be perfect to use but that was my only success with it so far.

I had a lot of fun running it and am already planning several other games to run, both at conventions and just for my gaming group. While I like running historical games, my miniatures selection tends toward the bizarre. I have most of the Washington Naval Treaty ships in my collection as well as some of the WWII German ships that never got built, like the H39. I also have an H42 and an H44, which is absolutely massive.
For the game I almost ran at Navcon, an Amagi BC was going to make an appearance. I might try running the last big battle in Hector Bywater's book where a Tosa and Amagi join the Japanese line of battle. That could be a really interesting fight using CoD rules instead of Battleship Row.

For the island I divided it up into 12 sections and gave each one a name. Then, whenever it got hit I would roll a D12 to see what got hit. The island itself was a 5+ to hit. If something got hit twice by a battleship it died. The cruisers who never shot at the island would have needed to hit more times to blow anything up. I'll probably modify how the island works when I run the scenario again.
I have also come to the conclusion that I am the only 1/3000 scale gamer in the Midwest. I have yet to see another person with that scale at a convention.

Yesterday I ran my first convention game of Naval Thunder. Here's the link to it from my gaming group's blog. chicagoskirmish.blogspot.com/2011/11/naval-thunder-at-rock-con.htmlAll the players got the hang of it fairly quickly but torpedoes seemed to be somewhat of an issue. One player who got hit by six spreads of torpedoes wasn't very happy with how they worked and the American battleship player thought they were too simplified as a direct fire weapon. But he was used to playing more involved naval games. Despite that, all the players had fun with the game and I saw several writing the name down so they could buy it later.

The SeaQuest universe would fit in really well with this as well. I don't know how many people even watched it, but it had lots of sci-fi elements and some of the recent fanfiction is probably better than the show ever was.

I have the Litko acrylic custom bases. I have a bunch of them and may buy more, but I found some acrylic from Home Depot that is thinner than 1/8th inch and is really cheap. I'm going to get some this week and try it out.

I really want to see what your bases end up looking like. I've been buying acrylic bases from Litko but would rather make them myself and save a few bucks.

I saw all your games posted up and would love to play one, but I can only come Saturday and am running my first game in the afternoon. That leaves the morning for shopping! But I'll try to wander over and say hi in the morning.

I'll have all my ships there to Oooh and Ahhh over and hopefully I can find some more to buy. My game isn't up yet but it should be in the morning and is for up to 10 players. I'm probably running the same game at Rock-Con in a month as well with some modifications from what I learn at Nav-Con.

I'll be running my game in 1/3000 scale. It is not the most popular scale here in the US but it is the one I chose a while ago and I really like the variety of ships available.
