1) When a ship which is part of a formation suffers a rudder hit, does it drop out of the formation? 2) In some of the historical scenarios, smaller ship types are set up in front of larger ship types in a line of column. (ex: US setup in Cape Esperance or the IJN Bombardment group in 2nd Guadalcanal) This seems to be at odds with the sequence of play with smaller ships moving before larger ships. How do players handle this? 3) When using the night battles optional rules does a ship that fires its guns in an earlier step become visible (i.e. muzzle flashes) to ships that fire in a later steps? 4) US ships which have RDR fire control in a scenario with the unreliable radar rule have to pass a command check (generally a d10 roll of 8, or 10 for the flagship) to gain the benefits. Is this correct? Thanks for any help I am only new myself but checking the rules suggests.... 1. As the ship with rudder damage no longer can move as part of the formation it must leave. 2. Setting up first is because the screening ships are spotted earlier. The movement sequence reflects the speed and manoeuvrability of smaller ships - thereby giving them an advantage by moving later. Two different things. 3. Muzzle flashes do not make a ship "visible" per the night fighting rules. This does not necessarily reflect what happened historically,eg Savo Island 4. Unreliable radar requires a command check as you note. In formations a successful command check uses the flagships command rating. Cheers, Tom

Did the ship data cards ever get correct?
I'm using v17 of the card print tool and it still shows 8"guns on the Nagara class, as well as 5"not 5.5"guns with the wrong number, and wrong number of torpedo tubes....
Was this ever fixed?
Thanks Tom

Interesting read gents.
We often play Close Action which is sort of the son of WS&IM. Similar system but nicely implemented. Some people can be put off by the detail but it isn't to bad. Great to play multiplayer with 1-2 ships each.
Cheers

Again nice pics. The last one with the light on the model looks fantastic and brings out the paint job. The low profile shot shows a nice profile of the ship.
Well done.

Like the camo on the Ellet.
Where did you get info on the paint schemes?

Great stuff. Are the decks stripey on the Chokai for a reason or is it just a photo glitch?

Just saw this.
One option would be to use an existing module ad the basis for a NT module. Eg the AH Bismarck vassal module tactical display would work and has ship counters for the Bisnark, etc.
Cheers, tom

Hi
Just wondering what people use as their ship basing technique.
I did a bit of research and after some tests / trial and error hope to mount my models on 1.5mm plastic bases (to prevent warping) and use PVA/ tinfoil to create the sea effect prior to painting. My plan is to paint with a number of washes and dry brushes to give some depth. The wakes will take a bit of work and experimentation I think.
I've seen some other basing with just PVA glue but it doesn't seem to capture the irregularities you see in the sea.
Any other tips or recommendations?
Thanks, Tom

Hi All,
Just looking at this in the rules and there is a +1 modifier for radar fire control. This is a significant advantage so I tried digging around to see what it was based on.
The early battle between Bismark and Hood was a fight between 2 radar equipped ships but the overall hit rate was pretty miserable (~3-5%) I think.
At Matapan the RN used radar to close on the Italian Navy, but fire was conducted using star shells and optical fire control.
In the Pacific, the USS Washington mauled the Kirishima using its radar guided guns. (hit rate ~15%)
I know there is an optional rule as to whether a ship uses its radar or not, but is it as simple as a +1 to hit for all radar equipped ships? This would leave pretty much all Axis and IJN ships at a significant disadvantage at most ranges.
Cheers, Tom

Hi,
I''ve only recently started getting into naval wargaming and have purchased some 1/3000 USN, RN and IJN ships. Is there an online guide to painting these? I've found a lot of B&W photos but obviously these lack colour.
Just wondering if there is an online guide to painting these fleets? I am looking at early way, ie around 1940-42.
Cheers Tom
